Part 2: Getting Buy-In from Stakeholders | Zero to HAM
Welcome to Part 2 of AMI’s “Zero to HAM” series, where we explore the essential steps to building a successful Hardware Asset Management (HAM) program.
In the first episode, we talked about the importance of admitting you have a problem — clearly defining the challenges your organization faces. In this post, we’re diving into Step 2: Getting buy-in from stakeholders.
Why Buy-In Is Critical
A successful hardware asset management initiative isn’t just about technology. It’s about people.
If your executive leadership, department directors, and field teams aren’t all aligned, your program will struggle to gain traction. Without that unified support, even the best software and processes will sit unused, collecting digital dust.
When people don’t buy in, you don’t get adoption — and without adoption, you don’t get results.
How to Get Stakeholder Support
To make HAM work, you must sell the vision. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
-
Communicate the “why.” Explain the business problem you’re solving — whether it’s wasted capital, compliance risks, or poor visibility.
-
Show the value. Make it clear how asset management will make daily work easier, faster, and more efficient.
-
Define success. Set measurable goals that everyone understands and can rally behind.
-
Include everyone. Engage people at every level — from C-suite executives to technicians on the floor.
When every team understands the purpose behind the program and feels invested in its success, your organization lays the groundwork for lasting results.
The Cost of Skipping Buy-In
Too often, organizations implement new software or processes without involving the people who actually use them. The outcome? A tool that no one trusts or bothers to maintain.
Tom Watson puts it simply: “Without the participation of the people on the floor, your processes aren’t going to work.”
When that happens, your asset management system becomes just another expensive shelfware — software that’s implemented but never produces the results it promised.
